If the anatomy of the T. rex is well known, the same cannot be said of its physiology and ecology. What if it were possible to observe a living one, then? That’s the point of de-extinction.
The de-extinction, or resurrection of species, consists of producing a living representative of an extinct species.
This desire emerged with the disappearances of animals that humans have witnessed since the 17th century. Whether out of scientific interest or guilt, since humans have often been the cause of these disappearances.
Biologists have been searching since the beginning of the 20th century for a way to revive ancient species. In 1905, Tyrannosaurus was named after a giant carnivorous dinosaur whose remains had been found.
The name, which comes from the Greek, means “king tyrant lizard” and was destined to become very popular. It was given the name because of its size: Tyrannosaurus rex was one of the largest land carnivores known at the time. Today, it remains the most massive known tyrannosauridae.
The complete skeleton (as of 2008) is in the Field Museum of Natural History in Chicago and is affectionately known as Sue. T. rex was estimated to have reached gigantic proportions: 13 m (43 ft) long, 4 m (13 ft) high at the hips, and 7 t (7.7 ti) in weight.
It was a dynamic and aggressive predator that devoured its prey in large chunks or even whole. Some scientists, however, tend to think that T. rex was more of a scavenger.
There are only about a dozen fairly good specimens of T. rex, plus some fragmentary bones representing about 30 individuals.
This species was found from Texas to Alberta in layers dating back to the last few million years of the Late Cretaceous, just before the great extinction 65 million years ago.
The genus Tyrannosaurus includes only one species, rex. A close relative, Tarbosaurus, has been discovered in Central Asia.
